Drugs are often used for remediation of physical or mental diseases. However, certain effects or adverse reactions are accompanied when drugs are used for treatment. An adverse drug reaction (ADR) which is an injury acquired from taking medication may arise following a single or prolong use of drugs or may be caused by the combination of two or more drugs. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines adverse drug reaction as “a response to a drug which is noxious and unintended, and which occurs at doses normally used in man for the prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy of disease, or for the modification of physiological function.” ADR is a type of adverse drug event (ADE) which refers to any injury that occurs when a drug is used for treatment, irrespective of whether the drug is suspected as the causative agent of such injury. Following heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

It is estimated that ADRs represents the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and Canada and also the sixth leading cause of death worldwide.

ADR, Adverse Drug ReactionAdverse drug reaction has a significant impact on healthcare delivery and drug producing industries. Since all drugs have the potential for adverse drug reactions, a risk-benefit analysis becomes necessary during prescription to analyze the possibility of benefit vs risk of ADRs.

Adverse drug reaction can be managed through specific treatments of the drug effects, and discontinuation of the drug if possible or administration of an alternative medication (if available) with no adverse effect.

ADR is of global concern today, and many are considering an alternative to treating diseases with the use of plants. Botanical medication is an active form of treatment that involves using plants or herbs. Plants have proven to be effective in the treatment of many diseases accompanied with the fact that they are cheap, safe and have minimal side effects when compared to pharmaceutical drugs.

The use of plants to treat disease is no longer news. Plants have been used by our ancestors to treat illness, and as a dietary supplement to maintain proper body functions. According to the World Health Organization, healing herbs are currently the primary medicines for two-thirds of the world's population.

Many traditional healing therapies such as the Unani, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Chinese Medicine and Aromatherapy are components of botanical medicine. Medicinal herbs contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that have biological activity. Herbal medicine employs the curative properties of different plant species and their respective parts such as leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, stems, and roots to treat or prevent diseases.

However, plants can act on the body effectively as pharmaceutical drugs and should be used with caution. Using herbs for treatment may be detrimental when used for a long period, when administered wrongly, used in excessive amounts, combined with other drugs or alcohol, or when used without caution or by persons who lack the knowledge of how herbs are used.

Using herbal products can reduce toxicity, maximize therapeutic outcomes, and provide solutions to counter ADR associated with synthetic drugs. Herbs are effective when administered correctly and in the right dosage. It is less expensive when compared to pharmaceutical products, and the side effects are minimal. The use of plant as medicine may be easy or difficult depending on the illness and the remedy used. The effects of herbal medicines are usually slow compared to pharmaceutical drugs and the administration could either be short-term or long-term depending on the nature or symptom of illness.

Herbal medicines are beneficial when administered to treat noticeable symptoms. The benefits of herbal products include: It is cost-effective, easy to prepare, minimal side effects, it is effective, easily available, and contains antioxidants and phytonutrients which are good for the body. Aloe Vera, ginger, garlic, turmeric, ginseng, and Ginkgo biloba are common examples of plant or herbs used in the treatment of diseases and have been shown to contain phytochemicals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds.
